Spain squad celebrates World Cup victory on open-top bus parade in Madrid

Spain returned home to a heroes welcome in Madrid after securing their second World Cup title. Nearly two million supporters filled the capital streets to greet the national team following their dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory against Argentina in New Jersey.

The squad met with King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at Moncloa Palace before embarking on an open-top bus parade through central Madrid. According to local authorities, approximately 120,000 people gathered at Cibeles Square under scorching temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius to join the main ceremony.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive extra-time goal in the final to seal the historic triumph. Based on official records, Spain became the first nation to hold both the men's and women's World Cup trophies simultaneously following the women's victory in 2023.

"Thank you to the coaches and players for the style of play, the effort, and the victory," Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told the squad during the official reception. Coach Luis de la Fuente expressed his gratitude to the crowd, stating it was an emotional and proud experience to represent the nation.

Tragedy, however, cast a shadow over the national celebrations. Local authorities confirmed that a 13-year-old boy in Salamanca died after a municipal fountain collapsed during the post-match festivities.
