Three weeks ago, Paul informed the Los Angeles Lakers that James would enter free agency after opting out of returning for his 24th NBA season.
According to reports from ESPN, potential landing spots for the league's all-time leading scorer include the Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat.
Courting franchises have reached out, but Paul stated no extra sales pitches are required. "We do not need you to go above and beyond about anything. It is clear. All the messages have been sent," Paul said.
Even NBA commissioner Adam Silver expressed a desire for a quick resolution to finalize the upcoming season schedule. Paul confirmed discussing the matter directly with Silver in New York, reinforcing that James will decide only when ready.
Addressing comparisons to James's high-profile 2010 announcement, Paul dismissed claims that they are intentionally building suspense. "We are not making this about attention and a spectacle," Paul said. "It is a business choice that he is making."
Based on official statistics, James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds in 60 games for the Lakers during the 2025–26 season. Over his 1,622 career games, he holds averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists.
