FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces calls to resign after World Cup controversies

FIFA president Gianni Infantino faces intense pressure to resign after high-profile figures accused him of damaging the global game during the World Cup.

La Liga president Javier Tebas expressed deep frustration with Infantino's governance, telling Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport that "his time is up" following a series of contentious decisions.

Tebas criticized the governing body for placing its own motives ahead of the sport, citing controversial commercial adjustments like expanded hydration breaks. According to Tebas, "FIFA arranges things as it pleases, for what it wants, for its own interests, certainly not for football."

The ongoing tournament has seen significant friction between football's leaders. Infantino drew widespread condemnation after overturning a suspension for USA forward Folarin Balogun following discussions with US President Donald Trump.

Relations between FIFA and European counterpart UEFA have soured dramatically over the incident. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin chose to boycott the World Cup final, with the European body stating FIFA had "crossed a red line" through an "incomprehensible and unjustifiable" ruling.

Despite mounting hostility from major European stakeholders, Infantino remains firmly entrenched in his role. His current presidential term runs through 2027.
